Built for speed!

The biology and make-up of the cheetah is simply mind blowing! Cheetahs are the fastest land mammal, reaching speeds between 110-120(km/h)/ (60-70mph). They can accelerate from 0-100(km/h) in just 3 seconds. However, if Cheetahs run for too long they can overheat and die – or go brain dead!

  • At top speed one stride is 8 meters in length.
  • They have a small head making them more aerodynamic – they can pull their ears flat against their head, increasing speed.
  • They have a long body and a flexible spine, allowing them to increase their stride length (this is the time when all 4 feet are off the ground).
  • They have long legs which helps to increase their speed.
  • They have a long flat tail, which works like a rudder on a boat. This helps them to turn at a 90-degree angle, at almost 90% of their top speed.
  • They have semi-retractable claws (their claws are always at least partially out). This helps them grip the ground as they run.
  • They also have special paw pads that allow for them to break quickly.
  • They have large nostrils and lungs, allowing them to breathe in more oxygen when they are running.
  • They have an enlarged heart to pump blood throughout the body and to their muscles. and to oxygenate their body even when they are running at top speeds.
  • All their muscle is in their back legs allowing them to push off and move quickly.
  • Cheetahs can only run at their top speed for 30-40 seconds, and then they must rest. Even if they catch their prey, they must not eat it until they cool down – otherwise they may regurgitate it.
